MATI HARI MEDUSA
hand pulled 4 colour screen-print, rewriting the narrative of the scorned woman.
Titled - 'Mati Hari Medusa', this piece is four colour screen print based of a hand drawn illustration. The central figure is an empowered anonymous female rising from the earth, in her hand a heart and at her feet a skeletal figure reaches to her. Inspired by the true story of Mati Hari, an exotic dancer who was prosecuted and later executed for being a German spy, and the legend of Medusa - a woman who was cursed for her sexuality. The illustration gives ownership back to the woman, who is in command of both the men who love her, those who prosecute her, and the head of snakes who she was cursed with.
I hand drew an intricate composition, that I then converted digitally into three layers which were screen printed individually. The final layer I created by hand brushing and splatting directly onto the acetate, I then used a more translucent colour to add movement to the illustration and bring the composition to life.
