CINEWORLD

Three large illustrations for the lobby of the newly renovated Cineworld in Belfast.

I was approached by an agency leading the development of the new Cineworld in the SSE Arena, Belfast, to create three illustrations that would be displayed in the lobby. Each piece was a minimum of 3m wide. The brief was to create pieces that celebrated the cinema experience and the city of Belfast, but was entirely open to how this could be interpreted.

I created three distinctly different illustrations each with a different take on the brief:
The first was an illustration that was designed to capture the drama of the new 4DX screen - A couple sat in the centre will film reel spooling around them to mimic the tracks of a rollercoaster, popcorn in hand and dynamic type bursting from the centre at speed.

The second was an abstract composition that aimed to capture the energy and history of the general cinema experience, but in a way that felt local. I included some elements that are instantly recognisable as classic cinema such as the screenings board, the traditional cinema sign and the popcorn but also added some subtle nods area such as the ‘Holywood’ sign, the cranes and the text on the clapper board.

The final illustration was simply a Titanic themed piece. Arguably one of the most iconic movies relating to Belfast, but also the most relevant what with the cinema being situated in the Titanic Quarter of the city. The illustration was simple and bold, and included some fun typography with the phrase ‘It was the ship of dreams.’
